Community Development
- Objectives
MSI emphasizes holistic development work. We aim at helping poor communities by enabling them to think through problems and discover workable solutions. Awareness training, small group discussions, village mapping, skill training and character building activities are some of the participatory methods used to help communities achieve sustainable development. Our objectives are to:
- improve living standards in rural village areas
- help communities to manage economic livelihood, basic health and children's education
- empower villagers to work together to build healthy harmonious communities
- Introduction
MSI community development work grew out of livestock work which started in Sichuan province in 1995 when the Zhaojue county government invited MSI to assist farmers in their livestock program. Similar work was done in Heqing / Yunnan province in 2003 to help Baiyi families raise their standard of living. These projects encourage and train farmers to adopt sustainable land use, land stabilization and pasture development as well as influence them to use scientific methods of rearing livestock. Work has since then been expanded to include other community development projects such as helping villagers to access drinking water, constructing water cisterns, building biogas toilets and providing training for village families.
