Introduction
Welcome to Chongqing municipality (重庆)! Chongqing, which can be literally translated from its Chinese characters as "double celebration", is located in south-east of Sichuan province at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. Chongqing is also known as the "Mountain City", one of the few cities in China where bicycles are not a common mode of transportation due to its rugged terrain. Chongqing's climate is extreme: summer temperatures have been known to soar close to 40 ºC, while winter temperatures are between 0º and 10ºC.
About the People
As the largest and most populous municipality in China, Chongqing is home to more than 32 million people with a Han Chinese majority. The rest are mainly the Tujia and Miao ethnic minorities which make up less than 10% of the population. Only 3.4 million live in the urban area of Chongqing proper, the remaining being spread over hundreds of miles of farmland. On the surface, the locals appear crude and reserved but, in reality, are an enthusiastic group of people, always ready to defend the weak and helpless. Most of the populace claim to be non-religious.
MSI's Work
MSI’s work in Chongqing began with short-term medical teams visiting local medical universities and hospitals to conduct medical exchange and training. This was quickly followed by short-term business administration and management (BAM) and English teams to local universities to conduct management training courses, English language and teacher training. Short -term medical and English teams are also involved in annual projects with hospitals and schools in Fengdu, which, nicknamed "Ghost City", is about 2 hours' ride from Chongqing city.
Opportunities
The educational institutions in Chongqing city welcome MSI professionals who are able to teach English or business subjects. Those able to train teachers are also welcome. Our short-term BAM courses are also popular and welcome both practitioners and academics in the business field to participate. Please do come join us in this Mountain City!
