MSI's BAM program aims to reach out by advising on micro-enterprises and community cooperatives both in urban and rural (poverty) areas. We partner with local the local government and higher learning institutions to place long and short-term workers, providing leadership and management training to senior officers and to build relationships. Our training programs include:
- upgrading of professional knowledge and skills
- facilitating the learning process
- instilling ethical responsibility
- improving communication and interview skills
- providing an understanding for responsible management and accountability.

MSI's Community Health Program began in 1995 in cooperation with the Public Health Bureau to guide and strengthen community health services in south western China. We aim to demonstrate the love of Christ by serving the poor, seeking to raise their awareness of hygiene and health needs and to improve overall living standards. The program also works towards helping local health personnel to better care for local needs and providing a seamless continuity of service from inpatient care to community care.

MSI emphasizes holistic development work. We work towards helping poverty communities by enabling them to think through problems and discover workable solutions. Awareness training, small group discussions, village mapping, skill training and character building activities are some of the participatory methods used to help communities achieve sustainable development. Our objectives are to:
- improve living standards in rural village areas
- help communities to manage economic livelihood, basic health and children's education
- empower villagers to work together to build healthy harmonious communities

MSI has served in Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces since 1996. During this time we have been acutely aware of the needs of young people. The majority of the rural populations are subsistence farmers, growing barely sufficient crops to sustain their livelihood. Because of these economic circumstances families are often unable to send their children to school. MSI has an Educational Sponsorship Program to help needy children from the Yi Autonomous region in Sichuan and the Hui minority people in Yunnan to go to school. This program provides financially for the educational needs of the students, as well as reaching out to care for students and their families through home visits.

We began our English program in 1996 when full time teachers were placed at a university in Chengdu. Short-term teams soon followed, offering courses to students in universities, public health schools and secondary schools. MSI teachers play an important role in helping students in rural and inland areas acquire critical language skills, especially now that English has been officially designated as China's second language.

MSI's livestock work began in 1995 with a sheep farming project in partnership with the local and provincial government in Sichuan Province. The aim is poverty alleviation in disadvantaged farming communities through a sheep and goat lend-and-return program. This program provides training and expert advice for sustainable livestock production and land and pasture management. Working in partnership with community health projects provides a holistic platform to upgrade livelihood, promote basic health and children's education.

The Medical Program focuses on delivering modern medical and preventive healthcare to China's inland provinces where needs abound. An integral part of this program involves helping less well-equipped hospitals upgrade their facilities in order that they can serve their communities more effectively. Training programs are also organized for regional health schools, county hospitals and universities.
Operation Eyesight's short-term teams have brought sight to hundreds of patients suffering from cataracts in various centers in Sichuan province.

In partnership with the Zhaojue County Government, the Youth Center provides a focus for healthy recreation and skills training through holistic education. There is an emphasis on character-building, skills and values transfer, community service and economic help through enterprise/ business start-up support. MSI aims to train and encourage local youth so they can be contributing and valued members of society, and equip them to find gainful employment.
